Update Router

1. Updated firmware from the Linksys website.
(for example for the WRT54G v1.1 to 4.21.1 (took all of about 3 minutes))

2. In router settings went to Applications/Gaming >QoS >At the bottom where it says Wireless Qos: WMM >>Enabled

3. In router settings went to Security >VPN and Enabled: IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP. (I think IPSec is all that's necessary but they were all checked already)

4. Went to the TMobile website, signed in and clicked on "View My Profile." Clicked on 911 Address and filled in the information.

Backup / Restore

1. Turn radio off old BB.

2. Backup the device using Desktop Manager.

3. Remove sim card from old BB and place in new BB.

4. Do a Selective Restore from the Backup you made in step 2.

4a. Restore Messages, Message Options, Calendar, Calendar Options, Contacts, Contact Options, Content Store, Bookmarks, Bookmark folders, Password Keeper, PIN messages. Only restore what you absolutely have to have. If you do a full restore you will lose UMA capability. If you're on a BES, you really don't need to restore anything

Once the Restore was done, do the following:

1. I have mac address filtering enabled on my router so I did the following to allow the BB's mac address on the network:

1a. Logged into my router.

1b. Went to Wireless >Wireless Mac Filter >Added the mac address of the BB. I found it in Options >Status on the BB.

UMA Settings

Per LINKSYS tech support use the following values in your router:

  • Fragment Threshold : 2304 (256-2346)
  • RTS Threshold : 2304 (0-2347)
  • Beacon Interval : 50 (20-1024 ms)
  • Channel : 3

This has solved many issues with failed UMA connections.

On the BB:

1. Used the Setup WiFi and Scan for networks.

2. Linksys came up and I hit menu key and connect.

3. I have WEP enabled so I entered the WEP key for the wireless router. If you don't know what your wep key is do the following:

3a. Go into your WRT54G router and select the Wireless tab.

3b. Select Wireless Security.

3c. Note the default transmit key number and then use the corresponding WEP key in the wifi setup on the BB. (not your passphrase)

4. I renamed the network Linksys-Home and saved the settings.
